One of our reasons for being in Köyceğiz was to visit Kaunos.  The site has in part been turned into a nature park, a good combination from our point of view.  The ruins were impressive, the setting even more so.  We got to see freshwater turtles, a snake, a rock nuthatch nesting in the arched entrance to the theatre, an egret, various other birds and some lizards, a tortoise, frogs, butterflies, and the air was at times thick with dragonflies of many different colours.

Kaunos is easy enough to get to, from Dalyan – cross the river by rowing boat and a 20 minute walk to the site, or alternatively if this is your thing tours can be arranged.  Commonly from Dalyan and Köyceğiz, and also wider afield, with various other stops as well, commonly Iztuzu beach.

We really liked Kaunos, spent some hours there and fortunately the weather held.  Despite the proximity to Dalyan and mass tourism the site was remarkably quiet and peaceful.
